White House Plumbers looks to be HBO’s newest prestige miniseries hit. It helps that it boasts a big-time cast that brings to life one of the wilder stories in American political history. HBO is taking on the infamous Watergate scandal in a new limited series coming to the network this spring. Given all the projects being flushed down the drain at HBO these days, it’s no surprise that some plumbers have been hired. And who better to play HBO’s Mario and Luigi than Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux? Okay, fine, The White House Plumbers isn’t actually a show about fixing pipes.

The dialogue is rich throughout White House Plumbers, and so are the performances and characters. Harrelson is wonderful — exploding like Ralph Kramden one minute, simmering like Macbeth the next — and the supporting cast is a very deep bench, serving up unexpected treasures every episode. There's Kathleen Turner as lobbyist Dita Beard! And Lena Headey from Game of Thrones as Hunt's wife, Dorothy! And Gary Cole as FBI executive Mark Felt – who, though he's not identified as such here, in real life was the infamous Deep Throat of All the President's Men. Mostly, though, the actors in the overqualified supporting cast come in, attempt to yell or flail or sputter exaggeratedly to keep up with the leads and then depart without justifying their performance. By the end of an hour, I was exhausted by the hijinks. By the end of two hours, having sat through extended reenactments of each failed Watergate break-in, I was looking for anything resembling a still center to this madcap universe. By the end of three hours, I’d identified Headey’s clear-eyed and capable Dorothy as the one character here worth rooting for — like a more deadly version of Martha Mitchell, the focus of Starz’s recent attempt to paint Watergate as a scandal fueled by buffoons. And by the end of the fourth episode I was actively angry with the glibly cheap laughs that accompanied Dorothy and her real-life fate.

As the first trailer for the five-part miniseries shows, Harrelson and Theroux are instead starring as E. Gordon Liddy, the Watergate masterminds who accidentally toppled the presidency they were trying to protect. “You are White House employees on the payroll,” instructs Nixon official Bud Krogh (Rich Sommer). “For God’s sake, don’t get caught.” Lena Headey and Judy Greer star as the wives of the men who were ultimately connected to the “third-rate” burglary attempt.
White House Plumbers endeavors to humanize its perpetrators by illustrating that beneath their buffoonery was… lots and lots more buffoonery. The series starts with this imbecility already at maximum volume and then makes it louder and louder. When he isn’t writing dreadful spy novels under a pseudonym, Hunt is stuck in a dead-end PR job after getting forced out of the CIA.
Storyline
The Cubans were members of the Watergate break-in team that all had ties to working with Hunt during his time at the CIA. Frank Sturgis was a police officer, private investigator, Marine and anti-communist recruited by Howard Hunt to assist with the Watergate break-in. Playing Sturgis in White House Plumbers is Kim Coates, best known for his roles in titles like Bad Blood, Sons of Anarchy, Goon and Godless. McCord was another former CIA operative who was brought on in the official capacity to be the head of security for Nixon's Committee for the Re-Election of the President, but would find himself in the thick of the Watergate scandal. Gleeson is coming off some of the best reviews of his career for the FX series The Patient.

Hunt spent 33 months in prison for burglary, wiretapping, and conspiracy. The Game of Thrones actress plays Dorothy Hunt, first wife of E. She was killed in December 1972, when United Airlines Flight 553 crashed en route from Washington to Omaha. Though it was ruled an accident, her presence on the flight (and the fact that she had $10,000 in cash on her) led to various Watergate-related conspiracy theories, including that the crash was planned by the CIA. Thanks to the classic that is All the President's Men, we're more than familiar with the sensational true story of how Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered Watergate. Lesser known perhaps is the other duo at the heart of this scandal, a pair of operatives named E. Gordon Liddy, who also had a hand in toppling the Nixon presidency—except they had been scheming to do the exact opposite.
Sons of Anarchy actor Kim Coates is Frank Sturgis, another one of the five burglars involved in Watergate. In the '50s, Sturgis moved to Cuba and worked for Fidel Castro and as a CIA informant, and opened a training camp where he taught Che Guevarra guerilla warfare, then eventually defected and joined the anti-Castro opposition. He was also involved in a number of conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy, including some he perpetuated himself. For his role in Watergate, he spent 14 months in prison. Another link to another assassination, that of Portuguese prime minister Francisco de Sá Carneiro.
